# Workflow triggers: webhooks, schedules, and app events

> Workflows start from a webhook, a cron schedule, or new items in Gmail, Google Sheets, Calendar, Stripe, Reddit, or RSS, and each item fires only once.

A workflow is only useful if it runs at the right moment. By February 26 there were three ways to start one, and they are still the three trigger types today: a webhook, a schedule, or a poll that watches one of your apps for new items. The first polling providers covered new emails in [Gmail](/apps/gmail), new rows in [Google Sheets](/apps/google-sheets), Google Calendar events, [Stripe](/apps/stripe) charges and subscriptions, new subreddit posts, and RSS feeds.

### How it works

- **Webhooks.** Any workflow can be started by an authenticated HTTP request, and the dashboard's run form is generated from the workflow's input schema.
- **Schedules.** Cron expressions with a per-workflow time zone.
- **Shared poll sources.** Each source, such as an inbox or a spreadsheet, is checked once a minute no matter how many workflows watch it, and every item is recorded so it never fires twice.
- **Broken workflows stop themselves.** If a workflow's last three runs fail, it is turned off automatically and you are told why.

### Also shipped

- A Data captured tab shows exactly what each trigger received.
- A workflow can have several triggers, each enabled on its own.
