# Agent skills: reusable SKILL.md instructions for every agent

> Skills are portable SKILL.md bundles in the open Agent Skills format that any agent loads when a task matches. Build them in chat or import a .zip.

Workflows and apps do work; skills teach agents how to do it. A skill is a `SKILL.md` instruction bundle in the open Agent Skills format: your email conventions, a report layout, a triage procedure, plus any scripts and templates that go with it. Skills now sit beside workflows and apps with their own page, every agent in the workspace can load them, and because the format is portable, a skill written here works in other Agent Skills hosts and the reverse. See why we favor [small agents over mega-skills](/blog/small-agents-not-mega-skills).

### How it works

- **The bundle.** `SKILL.md` holds a name and description, with optional scripts, references, and asset folders for runnable code, long reference material, and templates.
- **Progressive disclosure.** Agents see only each skill's name and description until one matches the task; then the body loads and its files are placed in the sandbox. You can also @-mention a skill to use it directly.
- **Validated on publish.** Every link inside the bundle must resolve, and a failed publish changes nothing.
- **Lifecycle.** Describe a skill and an agent drafts it, or import a .zip. Every publish saves a version, skills can be switched on or off, and they share like workflows.

### Also shipped

- The `geni` CLI authors skills with the same commands as workflows and apps.
