iPhone conversations open at the end in one step

Opening a long conversation on the iPhone app could land a few replies above the end, then slide down one reply at a time until it reached the newest message. Conversations now open on their newest message in one step, and scrolling back through a long history takes less work, so it stays smooth.

How it works

  • The newest messages come first. A conversation lays out and measures its most recent messages before anything else, so the end it opens on is the real end, not an estimate.
  • Hidden until it is in place. The loading placeholder stays up until the newest messages are laid out and the conversation sits at its end, then it reveals them there.
  • Nothing moves while you read. Older messages fill in above as you scroll up, and the messages on screen stay where they are while they do, including when "Loading earlier…" appears at the top.
  • Smoother scrolling. Views for messages that have scrolled away are reused for the ones coming in, so a long history scrolls with less work for your phone.

Also shipped

  • A resource's editing chat and a run's activity use the same list, so they open the same way.
