Ask Gumroad buyers for a testimonial a week after they buy
Every morning a friendly note goes out to the people who bought from you a week ago, asking one real question, so testimonials pile up without you chasing anyone.
Every day at 10am, find the people who bought one of my Gumroad products exactly seven days ago and ask each of them for a testimonial. Seven days is the sweet spot: long enough that the buyer has actually used the product, recent enough that the experience is still fresh in their mind.
Start by pulling the sales. Use Gumroad List Sales with the after and before date filters set to bracket the single calendar day that fell seven days before today, so I get that day's purchases and nothing else. Both filters accept ISO8601 date-time strings. If the response comes back paginated, page through it so no buyer from that day is missed.
Before writing to anyone, read my ledger. Use Google Sheets Get Values on my "Testimonial requests" spreadsheet, which holds one row per person already contacted with their email address, the product name, and the date they were asked. Skip the header row and treat the email column as the definitive record of who has already heard from me.
Now decide who is actually eligible. Skip any buyer whose email address already appears anywhere in that ledger, even when the earlier row was for a different product: I want each person asked once ever, no matter how many things they buy from me. Skip any sale that came back refunded. Skip any free or zero dollar purchase. Gumroad returns amounts in the smallest currency unit, so compare against cents rather than dollars when checking whether a sale was genuinely paid for. If the same buyer bought two products on that day, ask about only one of them, picking the more expensive purchase.
Cap the run at around 20 requests per day so a big launch week does not turn into a mass blast. If more than 20 buyers are eligible, work through the highest value purchases first and let the rest go unasked.
For each eligible buyer, write a short personal email. Name the exact product they bought, and ask one specific question they can answer in a couple of sentences, such as what problem they were trying to solve when they bought it, or what the first thing they did with it was. Do not send a generic "please leave a review" request. Keep it to a few sentences, write like a person rather than a marketing sequence, and make it clear they can just hit reply.
Send each email with Gmail: build the message with Create a Draft, then send it with Send a Draft.
Immediately after each send, append a row to the "Testimonial requests" sheet using Google Sheets Append Values, recording the buyer email, the product name, and the date asked. This ledger is the only thing standing between me and emailing someone twice, so write the row for every single person contacted, and write it as you go rather than batching it at the end of the run.
If no sales landed in that day's window, or every buyer from it is already in the ledger, refunded, or free, then send nothing and end the run quietly.
What does this prompt do?
- Each morning it finds everyone who bought one of your products exactly seven days ago, long enough that they have actually used it and recent enough that it is still fresh
- It checks your testimonial spreadsheet first and quietly skips anyone you have already asked, along with refunded orders and free downloads
- It writes each buyer a short personal email that names the exact product they bought and asks one specific question instead of a generic please leave a review
- Every request is logged back to the same spreadsheet, so the same customer is never asked twice even if they buy from you again later
What do I need to use this?
- A Gumroad account with the products you sell
- A Gmail account for the requests to come from, so replies land in your normal inbox
- A Google Sheet, for example one called Testimonial requests, with columns for buyer email, product name, and the date they were asked
How can I customize it?
- Change the seven day wait: stretch it if your product takes longer to get value from, or shorten it for something people use the same afternoon
- Raise or lower the daily cap of about 20 requests to match your sales volume, and move the 10am send time to suit your audience
- Rewrite the question the email asks, or point buyers at a specific review page if you would rather collect testimonials in one place
