Daily judge prep memos for hearings on your calendar
Every weekday at 6:30am, scan your calendar for upcoming court appearances and get a one-page prep memo per judge, delivered to your inbox.
Build me an agent workflow that runs on a cron trigger every weekday at 6:30am America/New_York and prepares me for court. Its job is to find real court appearances on my calendar in the next three business days and write a one-page judge prep memo for each one.
Step 1. Pull calendar events. Use Google Calendar List Events on my primary calendar for the window from now through the end of the third business day ahead (skip weekends). Filter to events that look like court appearances: the title (or the notes/description) contains any of hearing, oral argument, argument, status conference, pretrial conference, trial, motion, or the location matches a courtroom pattern (for example Dept, Courtroom, Ctrm, Div, or a case-caption style like v. or vs.). Skip anything that does not match. If nothing matches, still send me a short digest saying no hearings on deck so I know the job ran.
Step 2. For each qualifying event, identify the judge. Look for a judge name in the title, description, attendees, or location (Hon., Judge, Justice, Magistrate). If a courtroom or department is named without a judge, that is fine, capture it for the memo. Extract the motion type or subject matter from the title/notes (motion to dismiss, summary judgment, Daubert, discovery dispute, sentencing, TRO, etc.) and note the case caption if present.
Step 3. Research the judge on CourtListener. Use List People (Judges) with a name filter to find candidates, then Get Person (Judge) for the best match, and List Judge Positions to get their current court, title, appointment date, and appointing authority. Then use Search and List Opinion Clusters filtered to that judge to pull the most recent opinions (last 12 months) and any prior rulings that touch the same motion type or subject from the event. If oral argument audio is available on that judge from List Oral Argument Audio, pull 1-3 short quotable lines from the transcripts/descriptions where possible.
Step 4. Draft the prep memo in Google Docs. Use Create Document with a title like "Prep memo — [Case caption or event title] — [Judge last name] — [Hearing date]", then Batch Update Document to insert the body. The memo should be one page and cover: (a) judge bio and appointment (court, appointed by, tenure), (b) 3-5 notable recent rulings with one-line summaries, (c) tendencies on the specific motion type at hand (grant/deny patterns, what they tend to focus on, standards they cite), (d) 2-3 quotable lines from oral arguments if available, and (e) a short "what to watch" bullet list for the hearing. Put a CourtListener source link under each item so I can verify.
Step 5. Send me one Gmail digest for the day. Use Gmail Send a Message to email myself with the subject "Court prep — [Weekday, Date] — [N] hearings" and a short body: for each hearing, one line with the time, case caption, judge, and motion type, followed by the Google Docs link to that memo, followed by a 1-2 sentence "what to expect" summary. If I have zero qualifying hearings, send a very short note saying so. If any hearing failed to identify a judge, flag it in the digest instead of skipping silently.
Rules: never draft a memo for an event that does not clearly look like a court appearance. If CourtListener has no data on the judge, say so plainly in the memo rather than fabricating. Cite specific opinion cluster names and dates for every claim about the judge's tendencies. Keep the memo to one page. Timezone is America/New_York.
Additional information
What does this prompt do?
- Reads your Google Calendar every morning and pulls out real court appearances in the next three business days, ignoring regular meetings.
- For each hearing, researches the presiding judge on CourtListener: background, appointment history, and their most recent rulings.
- Looks up how the judge has ruled on the specific motion type or subject in the event title, and pulls quotable lines from prior oral arguments when available.
- Writes a one-page prep memo per hearing in Google Docs and emails you a single morning digest with links to each memo and a short read on what to expect.
What do I need to use this?
- A Google account with Calendar, Docs, and Gmail access.
- A CourtListener account for the judge and case research.
- Court hearings on your calendar with the judge or courtroom named in the title or notes.
How can I customize it?
- Change the run time or how many days ahead it looks (default is the next three business days).
- Adjust the keywords that decide what counts as a court appearance versus a normal meeting.
- Tell it what to include in the memo, for example add sections on opposing counsel, courtroom logistics, or citation checks.
- Send the digest to a paralegal or an assistant instead of yourself, or add a second recipient.
