Daily Motion morning briefing in your Slack DMs
Every weekday at 7:30am, get a Slack DM that turns your Motion tasks into a focused day plan: top priorities, overdue items, and safe defers.
Every weekday at 7:30am in my local timezone, run a personal morning briefing and post it to me as a Slack DM. The trigger is a cron on that schedule.
Step 1 — pull my tasks from Motion using the List Tasks operation. Include everything scheduled or due today plus anything overdue. Capture priority (ASAP, HIGH, MEDIUM, LOW), deadline, deadline type (HARD, SOFT, NONE), duration, autoScheduled details, and status.
Step 2 — reason about what actually matters today. This is opinionated summarization, not a list dump. Group the picks into three sections:
1) Today's top priorities — the three to five items I actually need to move on today. Weight ASAP and HIGH priority, hard deadlines, and anything auto-scheduled into working hours today. Notice if the day looks overloaded relative to the hours available.
2) Overdue and needs attention — items past their deadline that still matter. Skip stale low-priority items that are clearly noise.
3) Deferrable — recurring or low-priority items that can safely slide if the day gets crowded, so I know what to drop first.
Cap each section at five tasks. For each line include the priority tag, the deadline (or 'no deadline'), and a one-clause reason it surfaced. Examples: 'ASAP, due today 3pm, hard deadline' or 'HIGH, deadline slipped 2 days ago' or 'recurring MEDIUM, safe to skip today'. If a section has nothing to show, print a single 'nothing here today' line so the structure stays consistent.
Step 3 — post the whole briefing as a Slack DM to me using the Slack Send a Message operation. Use Slack mrkdwn formatting (single asterisks for bold), give each section a bold header, and keep the total message short enough to read in about 30 seconds.
Do not modify anything in Motion. This is read only. Just fetch tasks, reason, and post.
What does this prompt do?
- Pulls your scheduled, due, and overdue Motion tasks every weekday morning so you never open the app just to figure out your day.
- Picks the three to five items that actually matter, weighing priority, deadline pressure, and what is already on your calendar.
- Delivers a clean Slack DM with three sections: today's top priorities, overdue and slipping, and safe to defer.
- Explains each pick in one short line so you know why it made the list, not just that it did.
What do I need to use this?
- A Motion account with your tasks and calendar already set up.
- A Slack workspace where you want the briefing DM to land.
- About two minutes to connect both accounts on first run.
How can I customize it?
- Change the delivery time, timezone, or run it on weekends too.
- Swap the personal DM for a channel post, or add a teammate to the recipient list.
- Adjust the five-per-section cap or tune what counts as a top priority for your day.
