Monthly investor update draft from Metabase
On the first business day of each month at 8am, get a written investor update drafted from your Metabase numbers, staged in Google Docs, and queued as a Gmail draft to your investor list.
Build me an agent workflow that drafts my monthly investor update. It should run on a cron trigger at 8am on the first business day of each month.
On each run, use Metabase Run Card Query to execute the founder-specified saved questions for our core investor metrics: MRR, net new logos, gross revenue retention, net revenue retention, cash burn, and months of runway. The Metabase card IDs for each metric should be configurable inputs on the workflow so I can swap them without editing the instructions. For each metric, compute the month-over-month delta (absolute and percentage) versus last month's value.
Then use Google Docs Create Document to make a new doc titled "Investor Update - [Month Year]" (for example "Investor Update - July 2026"). Immediately use Google Docs Batch Update Document to fill the doc in one atomic update with two sections. Section one is a written narrative that leads with what changed this month and why, in a candid, specific tone. Do not open with a wall of numbers or charts. Any metric that regressed month-over-month must get its own short paragraph explaining likely drivers based on the data available. Section two is a clean metrics table with columns for Metric, This Month, Last Month, Change, and Percent Change, one row per metric.
Finally, use Gmail Create a Draft to stage an email to my saved investor recipient list (configurable input, comma-separated To and Bcc). The subject should be "Investor Update - [Month Year]". The body is a short cover note (three or four sentences max) that names the one or two most important things that moved, and includes a link to the Google Doc created in the previous step. Do not send the email. Leave it as a draft so I can review and hit send myself.
Configurable inputs on the workflow: Metabase card ID per metric, investor recipient list (To and Bcc), doc title prefix, optional Google Drive folder ID to file the doc into, and tone guidance (default: candid and specific, avoid corporate hedging). If any Metabase card fails to run, still produce the doc and email draft but flag the missing metric inline in both places rather than aborting the run.
Additional information
What does this prompt do?
- Pulls your core investor metrics straight from Metabase on the first business day of each month, so the numbers are ready before you sit down with coffee.
- Calculates month-over-month deltas for MRR, net new logos, gross and net revenue retention, cash burn, and months of runway.
- Drafts a new Google Doc titled Investor Update and month, leading with a candid narrative on what changed and why, followed by a clean metrics table.
- Queues a Gmail draft to your saved investor list with a short cover note and a link to the doc, so you just review and hit send.
What do I need to use this?
- A Metabase workspace with saved questions for each metric you want in the update (MRR, net new logos, GRR, NRR, burn, runway).
- A Google account with access to Google Docs for the drafted update.
- A Gmail account and your investor recipient list so the cover email can be staged as a draft.
How can I customize it?
- Swap in your own Metabase saved questions or add new metrics (ARR, pipeline coverage, hiring plan progress) to the pull list.
- Change the tone and structure of the narrative, for example lead with wins, or ask for a separate go-to-market section.
- Adjust the timing, the investor recipient list, the doc title format, or route the doc into a specific Google Drive folder.
- Tell it which regressed metrics deserve their own paragraph and what level of explanation you want on likely drivers.
