Turn daily industry news into drafted content angles
Every weekday morning, two or three fresh news stories land in your content backlog as drafted angles your team can publish the same day.
Every weekday at 7am, find fresh industry news my company can credibly comment on, turn the best two or three stories into drafted content angles, file each one in my Notion content backlog, and post a single Slack message so a marketer can pick one and publish it that morning.
Start with NewsAPI using Search Everything. Query my industry keywords: <list your keywords and topics here>. Restrict to articles published in the last 24 hours, set language to English, and sort by relevance. Keep in mind that the free NewsAPI Developer plan delays articles by up to 24 hours and only serves articles up to one month old, so a 24 hour lookback is the right window and this workflow should not try to chase breaking news.
The article content field NewsAPI returns is truncated to roughly 200 characters, so draft from the headline, description, source name, and URL rather than assuming you have the full article text. Do not invent details that are not present in what the search returned.
Before drafting anything, check what the backlog already covers. Use Notion Query a Data Source against my content backlog at <link or name your Notion content backlog database> to pull recent entries, and skip any story whose angle is already represented there.
Then judge what is actually worth commenting on. Keep stories where my company has a credible and non-obvious point of view. Skip stories that are just competitor product announcements, skip anything the backlog already covers, skip clickbait and low quality sources, and never draft commentary on tragedy, layoffs, or crisis coverage. If fewer than two stories clear the bar, that is fine. Keep only what is genuinely good rather than padding the list to three.
For each story you keep, label it as an opportunity, a risk, or a trend, then draft a short point of view: a hook of one or two sentences a marketer could open a post with, written in my company's voice rather than as a neutral summary.
Create one page per angle in my Notion content backlog using Create a Page. Use the headline as the page title, and carry the source link, the drafted hook, one line on why it is relevant to us, and the opportunity, risk, or trend label.
Finish by sending a single Slack message with Send a Message to <name your marketing channel>, listing the angles that landed. For each one include the headline, the label, the drafted hook, and a link to its new Notion page. Send one message covering everything, not one message per angle. If nothing cleared the bar that morning, say so briefly rather than staying silent.
What does this prompt do?
- Scans the last 24 hours of industry news every weekday morning for stories matching the keywords you care about.
- Picks the two or three stories your company can credibly comment on, then drafts a short point of view and an opening hook for each.
- Files every angle in your Notion content backlog with the headline, the source link, the drafted hook, and one line on why it is relevant to you.
- Posts a single Slack message listing the angles that landed, so a marketer can pick one and publish it that morning.
What do I need to use this?
- A NewsAPI account. The free plan is enough for this.
- A Notion workspace with a content backlog database the workflow can add pages to.
- A Slack workspace and a channel where your marketing team already works.
- A short list of the industry keywords and topics you want watched.
How can I customize it?
- Change the timing. Weekday mornings at 7am is the default, but any schedule works.
- Swap the keywords, or narrow to specific publications, as your positioning shifts.
- Adjust how many angles get drafted each day, and add your own no-go topics beyond tragedy, layoffs, and crisis coverage.
- Point it at a different backlog database or a different Slack channel.
