Whenever a new video is uploaded to my Vimeo account, prepare the whole launch package for it across Vimeo, Slack, and LinkedIn, and get a human to sign off before anything goes public.

Start by reading the new video with Vimeo Get Video. Collect the title, the current description, any tags already on it, the privacy setting, the link to the video, and the folder or showcase it landed in. The folder or showcase name is usually the strongest signal for what the video is about and who it is for, so treat it as context for everything you draft.

Before drafting anything, decide whether the description was already written by hand. If the current description reads like real writing, meaning more than a sentence or two, full sentences, and specific detail about the content, treat it as human authored and do not replace it. Keep it exactly as it is and say so in the Slack message so the team understands why nothing changed. Only draft a replacement description when the field is empty, holds an obvious placeholder, or contains an auto generated filename style string.

When a description is needed, write an SEO friendly one. Lead with the specific value of the video in the first sentence or two, since that is what shows up in search results and social previews. Use natural language that a person would actually type into a search box rather than stuffing keywords. Keep it to roughly two or three short paragraphs. Separately, propose five to ten topic tags drawn from the title, the existing description, and the folder or showcase. Tags should be real topics and themes, not generic filler like video, content, or media.

Apply the Vimeo changes directly. Use Edit Video to set the new description, but only when you determined a new one was needed. Use Add Video Tags to add the proposed tags. Tags are additive and do not clobber anything, so add them even when you are keeping a hand written description.

Next, draft a short LinkedIn post that links to the video. Open with the hook, not the title, and never make the first line a restatement of the title. Lead with the problem the video solves, a surprising claim, or the question the viewer already has in their head, then give them a concrete reason to click. Keep the entire post under 1,300 characters including the link, and actually count the characters before you finish.

Post the full package into my Slack channel with Send a Message. Split it into two clearly labelled sections: what you already applied to Vimeo (the description, or a note that you kept the existing hand written one, plus the tags you added), and what is awaiting approval (the LinkedIn copy, with its character count). Include the video link and keep it skimmable. Then stop and wait. Do not publish anything to LinkedIn until a human replies with a clear thumbs up or approval.

Once someone approves, publish the post with LinkedIn Create Post exactly as approved. If the reply asks for changes instead, revise the draft and post the updated version back to the same Slack channel for another round of approval. If nobody responds at all, leave the LinkedIn post unpublished rather than proceeding on your own.

What does this prompt do?

  • Watches your Vimeo account and kicks in the moment a new video finishes uploading.
  • Writes a search-friendly description and a set of topic tags based on the video's title, its existing notes, and the folder or showcase it landed in.
  • Drafts a short LinkedIn post that opens with a hook instead of repeating the video title, and keeps it short enough to read without clicking see more.
  • Sends the whole package to a Slack channel and waits for a thumbs up before anything goes live on LinkedIn.

What do I need to use this?

  • A Vimeo account you can connect, with permission to edit your own videos.
  • A Slack workspace and a channel where your team can review and approve.
  • A LinkedIn account or company page you want your videos promoted on.
  • Videos that land in named folders or showcases help a lot, since that context shapes the writing.

How can I customize it?

  • Choose which Slack channel the approval request lands in and who needs to sign off.
  • Change how many tags you want, or set house rules like always including your brand or series name.
  • Adjust the tone and length of the LinkedIn post, or skip the LinkedIn step entirely for internal videos.

FAQs

Will this overwrite a description I already wrote myself?
No. If the video already has a real description written by a person, it is left alone and the workflow tells you in Slack that it kept your version. It only writes a description when the field is empty or holds a placeholder.
Does it post to LinkedIn automatically?
Not without a human approving first. The draft goes to Slack and sits there until someone gives it a thumbs up. If nobody replies, nothing gets published.
How long will the LinkedIn post be?
Under 1,300 characters, which is roughly what LinkedIn shows before readers have to click see more. That keeps your hook and your link visible in the feed.
Can I ask for changes instead of approving?
Yes. Reply in Slack with what you want different and it will rewrite the post and bring the new version back for another look before publishing.
Does it work for private or unlisted videos?
Yes, the description and tags still get written. Many teams turn off the LinkedIn step for private videos, since there is nothing public to link to.
