iPhone conversations keep up through spotty service

A conversation on the iPhone app could open on the copy saved on your phone and, on a weak signal, miss a newer reply until you left and came back. Conversations now keep reading quietly until they are current, say so only when the network is in the way, and the app reconnects as soon as your phone has service again.

How it works

  • Quiet unless something is wrong. Opening a conversation reads in what it missed with no loading line. "Connecting…" or "Waiting for network" shows only after three seconds of trouble, the lists' words. One that can't load yet waits out the same three seconds and loads on its own once service returns.
  • Retries on its own. A read lost on a weak signal tries again after one second, doubling up to thirty seconds, for as long as the conversation is open.
  • Back when service is. When your iPhone reports its network is back, the live connection, your lists, and the open conversation catch up at once instead of waiting out their retry timers.
  • Quick actions are kept. Marking a specialist read, pinning, and similar actions made while the connection drops are sent later instead of undone.
  • Replies arrive in one step. When a run's end reaches the phone before its reply does, the typing bubble stays until the reply is in hand.

Also shipped

  • A reply that comes in while you have its conversation open on a bad connection is marked read, so it does not come back as unread.
  • A second message or Stop in a new conversation, made before your first message got through, now stays in that conversation instead of starting another.
