Every weekday at 8am, check the discussion boards across my active Canvas courses and tell me which student questions are still waiting on a reply from me or my teaching team.

Use Canvas List Courses to find my active courses. For each course, use List Discussion Topics and skip anything that is an announcement. For every topic with recent activity, use Get Full Topic View to read the thread as a full nested reply tree, so you can see every reply sitting under every post. If a thread is too large to pull in one go, fall back to List Topic Entries and then List Entry Replies for the entries that matter.

Use List Enrollments in a Course to work out who the teachers and TAs are in each course, so you can reliably tell an instructor reply apart from a student reply rather than guessing from names.

Then use judgement to pick out the posts that are genuinely student questions, as opposed to general discussion, a required weekly post, or a thank-you note. A question counts as still waiting when no instructor or TA has replied to it for more than 24 hours, ignoring weekends, so a Friday afternoon question is not overdue on Monday morning. A reply from a classmate does not count as answered.

When a classmate has answered incorrectly or only partially, flag that above simple silence. A wrong answer is actively spreading to the rest of the class, which makes it more urgent than a question nobody has touched yet. Say plainly what the classmate got wrong so I can see why it was escalated.

Post one ranked digest to my teaching team Slack channel using Send a Message. Order it by how long each question has waited and how many students are asking the same thing, grouping duplicates of the same underlying question into a single item and noting how many students asked it. For each item include the course name, a link to the thread, the question itself, and a suggested reply I can review.

Draft those replies but never post them back to students automatically. Do not use Canvas Post a Reply or Post an Entry under any circumstances. Every drafted answer belongs in the digest for me to review and send myself, so no student ever receives an unreviewed reply.

When nothing is outstanding, say so in a single line instead of sending an empty digest.

What does this prompt do?

  • Checks the discussion boards in every one of your active courses each weekday morning, leaving announcements out of it.
  • Reads each recently active thread in full, including every nested reply, and picks out the posts that are genuinely student questions.
  • Ranks what is still waiting on you by how long it has gone unanswered and how many students are asking the same thing, putting wrong classmate answers at the very top.
  • Posts one digest to your teaching team channel with the course, a link to the thread, the question, and a suggested reply you can edit and send yourself.

What do I need to use this?

  • A Canvas account at your school with access to the courses you teach
  • A Slack workspace and a channel for you and your teaching team
  • Course discussion boards where your students post questions

How can I customize it?

  • Move the schedule off 8am, or point the digest at a different channel.
  • Change how long a question may sit before it counts as overdue. The default is 24 hours, and weekends are never counted against you.
  • Narrow it to specific courses, or to just the question and answer board in each course.
  • Tell it who counts as a responder, so replies from your TAs or a co-instructor close a question out the same way yours do.

FAQs

Will it reply to my students without me seeing it first?
No. It only ever drafts. Every suggested reply is written into the digest for you to read, edit, and send yourself, so nothing reaches a student that you have not personally approved. Posting answers back to the discussion board automatically is deliberately left out.
What makes a question count as unanswered?
A post has to read as a genuine student question, and it has to have gone more than 24 hours without a reply from you or another instructor. Weekends do not count, so a question asked on Friday afternoon will not be held against you first thing Monday.
If a classmate already answered, is the question closed?
No. Peer replies never mark a question as answered. If a classmate answered incorrectly or only half explained it, that gets flagged above the questions nobody touched at all, because a wrong answer is actively spreading to the rest of the class while silence is not.
Will I get a message even when nothing is waiting?
No. When every question has been handled you get a single line telling you so, rather than an empty digest to scroll past. That way a message in the channel always means there is something to look at.
Does it cover all of my courses at once?
Yes. It looks across every course you are currently teaching and puts everything into one ranked digest, so you are not checking boards course by course. Each item is labelled with its course name and links straight to the thread.
