Weekly arXiv digest as a LinkedIn-style draft

Every Friday, turn the week's top arXiv papers on a theme you pick into a ready-to-edit LinkedIn-style post saved as a Gmail draft.

Build me an agent workflow that turns the week's top arXiv papers on a theme I care about into a ready-to-edit LinkedIn-style post, delivered as a Gmail draft so I can review and edit before posting. The agent should never publish anywhere on its own.

Trigger: a cron schedule that runs every Friday at 3pm in my local timezone. Make the day, time, and timezone easy to change later.

Inputs I want to configure at setup time:

1. Theme or keywords to track (for example "retrieval augmented generation" or "diffusion world models"). Support a single phrase or a small set of related terms.

2. Time window in days, defaulting to 7 (the past week).

3. The Gmail address the draft should land in (default to my own connected Gmail account).

4. Tone guidance for the post (for example "analytical and skeptical, first person, no hype words").

What the agent should do each run:

Use the arXiv Search Papers operation to pull the top 10 to 15 papers from the past N days (default 7) that match the configured theme. Search across title, abstract, and category fields. Sort so the most relevant, most recent papers surface first, and filter to entries actually submitted or updated inside the window.

Read every abstract. Identify the unifying narrative for the week, or the two or three threads running through the set. Be honest: if the papers do not cohere into a real shift, say so in the draft rather than inventing one.

Draft a 250 to 400 word LinkedIn-style post that:

- Opens with a one or two sentence hook that is specific, not generic.

- Names the shift the agent is seeing in the week's work, in plain language.

- Cites two or three standout papers inline by title, each with the arxiv.org/abs/<id> URL (not the PDF URL), so readers land on the abstract page.

- Closes with a takeaway: what this means for builders, researchers, or operators working in the space.

- Follows the tone guidance I configured and reads like a thoughtful practitioner, not a press release.

Then use the Gmail Create a Draft operation to save the post as a draft addressed to the recipient I configured. Subject line should be "[Theme] weekly arXiv read, [start date] to [end date]", for example "RAG weekly arXiv read, May 24 to May 31". The body should be the draft post itself, plain text, with the citation URLs inline so they are clickable when I open the draft in Gmail.

Do not send the email and do not post anywhere. The draft is the final step. Logs should record which papers were considered, which were cited, and the chosen narrative, so I can sanity-check the agent's reasoning later.

Edge cases: if fewer than 3 relevant papers come back, still produce a draft but flag the thin week at the top of the body. If the search returns nothing usable, save a short draft saying the week was quiet on this theme instead of skipping silently.

What does this prompt do?

  • Pulls the top 10 to 15 arXiv papers from the last 7 days that match a research theme you configure, like retrieval augmented generation or diffusion world models.
  • Reads the abstracts, finds the unifying narrative or two or three threads running through the week, and drafts a 250 to 400 word LinkedIn-style post with a hook, the shift you are seeing, and a closing takeaway.
  • Cites two or three standout papers by title with clickable links to their arXiv abstract pages so reviewers can dig in.
  • Saves the finished draft to your Gmail so you can edit it in your own voice and post it manually, never auto-publishing on your behalf.

What do I need to use this?

  • A Gmail account you want the weekly draft delivered to.
  • A research theme or topic to track each week, such as a subfield, a method, or a set of keywords.
  • A few minutes the first time to set your tone, length, and the email address the draft should land in.

How can I customize it?

  • Change the theme or keywords any time you want to follow a new corner of research.
  • Move the run from Friday at 3pm to whatever day and time fits your writing rhythm.
  • Adjust the tone guidance, the post length, or the number of papers cited to match how you usually write on LinkedIn.

FAQs

Will this post to LinkedIn for me?
No, and that is the point. The draft lands in your Gmail inbox so you can edit it in your own voice and decide what, if anything, to publish.
How many papers does it look at each week?
It pulls the top 10 to 15 arXiv papers from the past 7 days that match your theme, reads the abstracts, and picks two or three to cite in the post.
Can I track more than one research theme?
Yes. Set up a separate run for each theme you care about. Many users have one for their main area and a second for an adjacent field.
What if a quiet week turns up nothing interesting?
If the agent cannot find a clear narrative, it will say so in the draft instead of inventing a shift that is not there. You can skip the week or tighten your keywords.
Do the citations link to the PDF or the abstract page?
Citations link to the arXiv abstract page, not the PDF, so you and your readers land on the paper's overview and can choose to open the PDF from there.
