Weekly DigitalOcean spend digest, in plain English
Every Monday, get a clear email that breaks down what your DigitalOcean bill is doing, what is driving the change, and which resources cost the most.
Every Monday at 8:00am, email me and my team a plain-English DigitalOcean spend digest. This is an agent workflow on a cron schedule. The goal is a short, readable summary a founder or finance lead can understand at a glance, not an engineering report.
First, pull the billing picture. Use DigitalOcean's Get Customer Balance operation to read the current account balance, the month-to-date usage, and the generated-at time. Then use List Billing History to pull recent invoices, payments, and credits so you can see how this period compares with previous months.
Next, identify the biggest resources behind the spend. Use List All Droplets, List All Database Clusters, and List All Apps to inventory what is running. Note the largest or most numerous resources and anything that looks like a likely cost driver, such as many Droplets, large database clusters, or a recently added app. Also call out notable new or removed resources compared with a typical week.
Then write the digest. It should clearly state this period's spend (the current balance and month-to-date usage), how it compares with the previous period (use the most recent full month's invoice from the billing history as the baseline and note whether the current run-rate is trending higher or lower), what is driving the change, and any notable new or removed resources. Put any unusual jump in month-to-date usage prominently near the top. Keep the tone plain and non-technical: explain what changed and why it matters for the budget, not how the infrastructure works.
Finally, send the digest with the Gmail Send a Message action to the recipient list. Keep the recipient email addresses and the send day defined clearly at the top of the workflow so they are easy to change later. Use a clear subject line that includes the date range, for example 'DigitalOcean spend digest for the week of <date>'.
