Weekly financial health check on your key suppliers
Every Monday, we check the market and news on every publicly traded supplier you depend on, update their risk status, and flag only what changed.
Every Monday at 7am, run a financial health check on the publicly traded suppliers and vendors my business depends on. Start by reading my vendor register in Airtable with List Records. Each row is one vendor and carries a ticker symbol, a spend tier or criticality flag, and a current risk status. Skip any private vendor that has no ticker symbol and leave those rows untouched.
For each remaining vendor, pull three things from Finnhub: Quote for the recent price move, Basic Financials for key liquidity, leverage and margin ratios, and Company News for the past week. Stay on Finnhub's free tier endpoints only, so no premium fundamentals and no analyst estimate endpoints. For any supplier listed outside the US, use the TICKER.EXCHANGE symbol format, for example RELIANCE.NS.
Then judge whether that supplier's financial footing has genuinely weakened, rather than reacting to any red week. Weigh signals like a sharp drawdown against the 52 week high, a deteriorating current ratio, rising debt levels, thinning margins, and news covering layoffs, restructuring, missed guidance, credit downgrades or going concern language. A single down week with nothing supporting it in the financials or the news is not a downgrade.
Write the verdict back to each vendor row with Airtable Update Record, setting a risk status, a one line rationale explaining the call, and the date checked.
Finally, post a single ranked digest to Slack with the Slack Bot Send a Message action. Cover only the vendors whose status changed this week or that sit at elevated risk. Put the most critical and highest spend suppliers first, and give each one a suggested next step, such as lining up a second source or revisiting an upcoming contract renewal.
Two things to be careful about. Compare against the status already stored in Airtable so the same unchanged warning is not re-alerted every week. And if it was a quiet week where nothing meaningful changed, say that plainly in one short message instead of padding the digest with routine updates.
What does this prompt do?
- Reads your vendor list every Monday morning and picks out the suppliers that are publicly traded, skipping private ones automatically
- Looks at each supplier's recent share price move, key financial ratios like liquidity and debt, and the past week of company news
- Decides whether that supplier's financial footing has genuinely weakened, then writes a risk status, a one line reason, and the date checked back onto their row
- Posts one ranked digest to Slack covering only the suppliers whose status changed or that sit at elevated risk, each with a suggested next step
What do I need to use this?
- An Airtable base holding your vendor list, with one row per supplier
- A ticker symbol column, plus a spend tier or criticality column so the digest can rank suppliers
- A risk status column, a short text column for the reason, and a date column for the last check
- A free Finnhub account for the market data, the free plan covers everything this uses
- A Slack workspace and a channel where the weekly digest should land
How can I customize it?
- Change when it runs, Monday at 7am by default, or move it to fortnightly if weekly feels like too much
- Adjust what counts as a warning sign, such as how far a share price has to fall from its yearly high before it matters
- Send the digest to a different channel, or straight to the procurement lead, and decide how many suppliers make the list
- Add a contract renewal date column so the suggested next steps can point at the renewals coming up
